Revolving Air Gun Targets
These are some drawings I have of a revolving target system I had made up for training the 4-H and Boy Scout kids to shoot moving targets w/airguns.
Go to drawings
A 3/8" drill motor propels a heavy plastic target around 10 inch wood pulleys, suspended 1" below a continuous parachutes cord "trolley" system.
The speed of the drill motor is controlled with a speed control device installed in the extension cord. 3-4 seconds per/revolution seems to be the speed that works the best for this system, any faster and we start jumping off the pulleys.
The cord must have 2, #4, stainless steel fishing swivels, approximately 4' apart to stop the cord from twisting. They must be at least 4' apart or they will be hit by the BB's, rendering them inoperable.
The target is suspended 1" below the main cord with a short piece of cord attached to the main cord where a #6 stainless split ring is installed in the main line. I leave these targets outside all year long!!
To stabilize the 2x4x16' that is on edge we screw and glue a 1x4x16' horizontally under the 2x4
Two coats of a quality exterior paint and these airgun targets will last for "YEARS OF FUN"
I use DAISY Model #840,s and #880,s which are quite accurate, one pump is all the faster we want to propel the BB,s as we need the boys to see where they are shooting!!
DO NOT HAVE ANY KIDS SHOOT THE RED RYDER BB GUNS
This is the gun that I originally bought and it is literally useless, I wouldn't even recommend this for a club!! This BB gun is notoriously INACCURATE !!!!!!!!!!
When I first developed this, I was using magazine covers for targets; I then progressed to pop cans, and eventually on to the hard plastic targets that we use now, a word of caution, SAFETY GLASSES ARE MANDATORY, the BB,s bounce back, even off the soft pop cans!!! The plastic that I use, I get off the top of 55 gallon drums.
This complete system can be built for less than $50 and the hardest task is threading the rod, anyone with ANY carpentry skills at all will have this completed in aprox 3 hours, without painting (Any photographers attempting this should have their carpenter friends over for an afternoon of beer)
ALL KIDS, BIG AND LITTLE, WILL SHOOT FOR HOURS AND HOURS, and we teach the kids to "LEAD" the plastic targets just like shooting a shotgun only a little bit cheaper!!
Daisy HQ at Rogers, AR 800-643-3458 www.daisy.com generously sold me the Airguns at a discount of 60% off for our shooting program Wal-Mart donated 10 cases of shotgun shells, resources are available, so lets give our kids the chance they deserve, I think that "WE" may have had more opportunities than our youth.
